Why a heat pump might finally make sense in Northern Kentucky
Five years ago we’d have told most Fort Thomas homeowners to stay on gas. That math has changed. Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold their efficiency down to ~10°F outside, the federal 25C tax credit puts up to $2,000 back in your pocket, and electric rates here are flat enough that running cost is genuinely competitive with natural gas.
That said, it’s still not the right answer for every home. A drafty 1920s foursquare in Newport with single-pane windows will still be better off with a high-efficiency gas furnace. A well-insulated 1990s Cold Spring ranch with an existing ductwork system is a textbook heat-pump candidate.
Dual-fuel configurations
The safest bet for our climate is a dual-fuel setup, a heat pump paired with a gas furnace backup that automatically takes over below a threshold (usually 30–35°F). You get the efficiency of the heat pump for 80% of the heating season and the brute-force heat of gas on the coldest nights.
What the 25C tax credit covers
Through 2032, the 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit gives you 30% back on qualifying heat pump equipment + installation labor, up to $2,000 per year. We pick equipment that qualifies and give you the forms your tax preparer needs. We are not tax advisors, but this is federal law and your CPA will know exactly what to do with it.
For the full breakdown (eligibility checklist, real calculation example, stacking with utility rebates, and what paperwork we hand you), see our 25C tax credit guide.
What sets this heat pump replacement job apart.
Honest sizing, heat pumps are especially sensitive to oversizing; we won't put a 4-ton on a 2.5-ton house.
Dual-fuel configurations done right: smart thermostat, proper balance point calculation, compressor lockout temp set for our climate.
25C tax credit paperwork handled, we provide everything your tax preparer needs.
If a heat pump doesn't pencil out for your house, we'll tell you and quote the gas furnace instead. No forced-sale.
Smart add-ons for a heat pump replacement.
While we’re already in your mechanical room, a few of these cost a fraction of what they’d run on a separate visit. Pricing is ballpark, not a quote.
Dual-fuel smart thermostat
Dual-fuel only works with the right thermostat. We set balance points + compressor lockout so the heat pump runs first, gas backup kicks in on the coldest mornings.

heat pump replacement, quick answers.
- Modern cold-climate heat pumps will, rated to heat down to ~5–10°F with 80%+ of their nameplate capacity. For the 2–3 weeks a year it gets below that, a dual-fuel gas backup handles the edge cases.
- Usually $1,500–$3,500 more installed. The 25C tax credit covers about half of that. Operating cost is a wash to slightly better than gas, depending on electric and gas rates.
- Often yes, if it's under 10 years old and in good shape. We can add a heat pump as the primary and leave the furnace as the backup, cheapest path to the efficiency upgrade.
Watson heat pump replacement reviews.
Google reviews from Northern Kentucky homeowners, filtered to mentions of heat pump replacement work.
“Mike and the crew were great! I submitted a service/quote request online through the website and had a response the same evening. Communication was easy and quick through my entire experience. My HVAC system was original to my condo (30 years old) and Mike and the team didn't bat an eye at converting to a heat pump system. Installation required some extra sweat working in my small laundry room, rewiring and adding junction box, rerouting drainage, adapting existing ductwork, and installing a new thermostat. They completed the job in a single day while I napped after working night shift. Good people, excellent work, and great price. 10/10, highly recommend. Thank you Mike!”
“New HVAC system (Furnace and Heat Pump) installed by a professional and friendly family business. Support small businesses!”
“Mike has taken care of my HVAC for the last 8 year's. He replaced my original unit this year that was 20 years old. My new unit runs fantastic and his air filter program is top notch. Every month I get a new filter sent to my house and it reminds me to change it right away, keeping my heat pump running at its top performance. I highly recommend Watson Heating and Cooling for great service and a competitive price.”
